Perched in the hills above Grasse — the perfume capital of the world — Golf de la Tour d'Opio occupies one of the more atmospheric settings in French Riviera golf. The course takes its name from the medieval tower that stands on the property, a remnant of the fortified village history that defines this corner of Provence. Designed by Donald Harradine, the Swiss-based architect responsible for numerous respected layouts across continental Europe, the course works its way through terraced hillside terrain, with olive groves, cypress trees, and the dry-stone walls typical of the Provençal backcountry shaping the character of the rounds.
The Alpes-Maritimes département sits inland from Cannes and Nice but feels a world apart from the coastal glitter. Up here the light is different, the air carries lavender and pine, and the views stretch toward the pre-Alps. Golf in this microclimate tends to reward shot-making over raw power, with elevation changes demanding more course management than a flat resort layout would.
La Tour d'Opio draws a mix of serious local members and visiting golfers making the short drive from the Côte d'Azur. It offers something the coast itself rarely can: genuine quiet, genuine countryside, and a round that feels rooted in its landscape rather than imposed upon it.
