Few courses in the English Home Counties carry quite the atmosphere of Hanbury Manor. The manor house itself — a Victorian neo-Jacobean pile that once served as a convent — sets the tone before you've pulled a club from your bag. The estate was converted into a luxury hotel and country club in the early 1990s, with Jack Nicklaus II designing the course across the rolling Hertfordshire parkland. It quickly established itself as one of the more serious resort-style tests in the southeast of England, combining genuine length and strategic demand with the manicured formality you'd expect from a Marriott flagship property.
Hertfordshire is quietly productive golf country — close enough to London to draw a discerning membership, yet open enough to offer real parkland character: mature oaks, subtle elevation changes, and that particular English country-house hush. Hanbury's course makes good use of the estate's grounds, with water coming into play on several holes and the manor looming as a constant backdrop.
It has hosted European Tour events and PGA EuroPro Tour tournaments over the years, lending it a competitive pedigree that distinguishes it from the county's more genteel members' clubs. This is polished, purposeful parkland golf.
