Few university golf courses in the country carry the architectural pedigree of this one. Lonnie Poole Golf Course opened in 2009, designed by Tom Fazio, making it one of the most ambitious collegiate golf facilities ever built. The course was funded largely through a $10 million gift from Lonnie Poole Jr., a prominent NC State alumnus, and it serves as the home facility for the Wolfpack men's and women's golf programs. Fazio shaped a routing that takes full advantage of the rolling Piedmont terrain on the western edge of campus, creating a layout with a distinctly private-club feel rarely associated with university golf.
The design features generous fairways that belie a layout with genuine strategic demands — approach angles matter, and the greens complexes reward careful course management over brute force. The Piedmont setting brings Bermuda fairways, native fescue roughs, and mature hardwoods that frame nearly every hole.
Raleigh sits in a region with a long golf tradition and a strong collegiate scene, but Lonnie Poole stands apart as a marquee facility — one that regularly draws comparisons to top public and semi-private layouts well beyond the college golf world.
