Few private clubs in Ontario carry the quiet prestige of Cutten Fields. Founded in 1929 and set on the rolling terrain southwest of downtown Guelph, the club was established by Frank O'Connor — the candy magnate behind Laura Secord chocolates — who brought in Stanley Thompson, Canada's greatest golf architect, to design the original layout. Thompson's fingerprints remain in the course's natural contours and strategic bunkering, and while the property has evolved over the decades, it retains the unhurried, members-first character Thompson's era prized.
Guelph sits in the heart of southern Ontario's limestone belt, and Cutten Fields reflects that geography — firm fairways, mature hardwoods, and significant elevation change that makes the course play more demanding than a glance at the card might suggest. The routing makes excellent use of the Hanlon Creek corridor, weaving through wooded valleys that feel genuinely removed from the surrounding city.
This is a club built around tradition and community rather than tournament spectacle. Membership here is a long-term relationship with a course that rewards patience, local knowledge, and the kind of repeat play that reveals new wrinkles every season.
