Few courses on the Algarve carry the same weight of reputation as San Lorenzo. Designed by Joseph Lee and opened in 1988, it was built by the Dona Filipa Hotel group and quickly established itself as one of the finest layouts in continental Europe — for years it topped nearly every ranking of the best courses in Portugal, and it remains a benchmark against which Algarve newcomers are measured.
The course occupies a genuinely dramatic setting within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, where the back nine threads along the edge of a lagoon system that opens toward the Atlantic. The combination of umbrella pines, water, and coastal estuary gives San Lorenzo a character that feels distinct from the typical holiday golf product — there is a wildness to the scenery that serious golfers tend to remember long after the round.
San Lorenzo plays as a private course available to guests of the Dona Filipa Hotel, which keeps it relatively uncrowded and well-conditioned. The closing holes along the water are among the most photographed in Iberian golf, and the course rewards accurate, thoughtful play over raw distance.
