Windmill Lakes Golf Club has a legitimate place in Ohio golf history — this is the work of Ted McAnlis, a prolific designer who left a significant mark on the northeastern Ohio golf scene during the latter half of the 20th century. The layout plays to a par 70, which reflects deliberate design choices rather than a compromised property: McAnlis used the rolling, lake-studded terrain of Portage County to create a course where water comes into play on a meaningful number of holes, demanding precision over raw distance.
Ravenna sits in the heart of northeastern Ohio, a region where the geography transitions from the flatlands of the western part of the state into the glacially carved hills and wetlands that define this corner of Appalachian foothills country. The result is terrain with genuine visual variety, and Windmill Lakes makes good use of the natural ponds and elevation changes the land provides.
This is an everyday public course — accessible and reasonably priced — that draws from the surrounding communities of Ravenna, Kent, and the greater Akron area. It offers a real golf experience on grounds that have a natural, unpretentious character.
