Few American cities have offered their residents continuous public access to golf as long as Knoxville has. The municipal course has been a fixture of the city's parks system for decades, giving generations of East Tennessee golfers a place to learn the game, play after work, and keep their handicaps honest without the barrier of a private membership.
The course sits within a city that occupies one of the more dramatic geographical settings in the South — the Tennessee Valley, hemmed in by the Great Smoky Mountains to the southeast and the Ridge-and-Valley terrain that gives this part of Appalachia its folded, rolling character.
