Few courses in America generated as much conversation when they opened as Trinity Forest did in 2018. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw — the duo behind Sand Hills and Friarwood — it was built on a former landfill and brownfield site along the Trinity River floodplain in southern Dallas, a location that struck many as improbable. Working with a naturally sandy, low-lying terrain, Coore and Crenshaw crafted a linkslike layout of wide, rumpled fairways, minimal rough, and greens that demand a player think carefully about ground angles and wind. It hosted the Byron Nelson Championship from 2018 through 2021, bringing PGA Tour competition back to the city and honoring one of Dallas's own legends.
The course plays at the high end of difficulty, and its open, treeless character means the Texas wind is always a factor — a feature, not a flaw, by design. Approach shots are rarely straightforward, and the putting surfaces reward creativity over brute force.
Trinity Forest sits in an underserved part of Dallas, and its development carries a civic dimension alongside its architectural ambitions. For golfers willing to engage with something genuinely different, it offers one of the more thought-provoking rounds in the state.
