Lamlash

Few places in Scottish golf carry quite the historical weight of Lamlash. Founded in 1884, this is one of the oldest clubs in Ayrshire — and arguably one of the most dramatically sited anywhere in Scotland. The course occupies the hillside above the village of Lamlash on the eastern coast of Arran, with views across the bay to Holy Island that stop you mid-swing if you let them.

The layout is a genuine hillside challenge rather than a leisurely seaside stroll. With a par of 64, the course leans heavily on shorter holes, but the terrain demands serious shot-making and club selection. Steep gradients, firm turf, and the unpredictable coastal wind conspire to make the card look far more forgiving than the round actually feels.

Arran itself is often called "Scotland in miniature" — its landscape shifting from rugged highland peaks to gentle farmland within a few miles. Getting here means a ferry from Ardrossan on the Ayrshire coast, which only adds to the sense that Lamlash is a course genuinely worth making the journey for.
