Purdue University's home course carries a reputation that reaches well beyond the Wabash River valley. Kampen opened in 1998, designed by Pete Dye — the Indiana-born architect behind Crooked Stick, Harbour Town, and TPC Sawgrass — and it plays as a genuine test rather than a collegiate courtesy. Dye brought his signature vocabulary here: railroad ties, forced carries, deceptive angles, and greens that punish the wrong side of the fairway. The Big Ten Conference has used it for championship play, and it regularly appears on lists of the finest university-owned courses in the country.
West Lafayette sits in the flat agricultural heartland of Indiana, but Dye found enough movement along Soldier Creek to create a routing with genuine topographic interest. Mature trees, wetland corridors, and the creek itself come into play throughout the round, giving the course a wilder feel than the surrounding cornbelt landscape might suggest.
Open to the public, Kampen offers everyday golfers access to a course built and maintained to competitive standards — the kind of layout where the difficulty is earned, not manufactured.
