Lewiston sits in the northern Lower Peninsula, deep in the Au Sable River country where the forest floor stays soft underfoot and the light through the pines has a particular quality that makes late-afternoon rounds feel unhurried. This is elk country, genuinely remote by Michigan standards, and the golf here belongs to that unhurried tradition of north-woods resort play that draws Chicago and Detroit regulars year after year for a week away from the city.
Monarch is the centerpiece course at Garland Lodge and Resort, one of Michigan's landmark north-woods retreats. Garland built its reputation on four distinctly designed 18-hole layouts spread across the property, and Monarch is generally regarded as the most dramatic of the quartet — heavily wooded, with elevation change that surprises visitors expecting the flat terrain common to so much of the Midwest, and a routing that keeps water and mature hardwoods in play throughout.
The broader Lewiston area rewards golfers willing to make the drive north. Staying on property means early tee times before the mist burns off the fairways, which in this corner of Michigan is reason enough to book the trip.
