Few public golf venues in America carry the weight of Torrey Pines. Perched on the bluffs above the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, the North Course is the companion layout to the more celebrated South, sharing the same dramatic clifftop setting where the coastal sage and Torrey pine trees — one of the rarest pine species on earth — frame nearly every hole. The municipal facility is operated by the City of San Diego, making it one of the most accessible world-class golf experiences in the country.
While the South Course hosts the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open and claimed the 2008 U.S. Open (Tiger Woods's dramatic playoff victory over Rocco Mediate), the North is the friendlier, more relaxed sibling — slightly shorter and less severe, but no less scenic. Redesigned by Rees Jones in the 2000s alongside the South, it offers genuine challenge without the teeth of its neighbor.
The ocean air, the sound of the Pacific far below the bluffs, and the sight of those ancient pines against the California sky make this one of the most atmospheric rounds public golf has to offer, regardless of what you shoot.
