Fred Couples and Gene Bates designed Talega Golf Club, which opened in 2001 as the centerpiece of a master-planned residential community in the hills above San Clemente. The routing makes strong use of the Talega Valley's natural topography — rolling terrain, dramatic elevation changes, and native coastal sage scrub that frames fairways and gives the course a wild, unharnessed feel despite its suburban surroundings. It plays as a genuine test that demands course management and shotmaking off the tee, particularly on the longer par 4s where the hills complicate both stance and approach.
San Clemente sits at the southern edge of Orange County, where the coast bends toward Camp Pendleton and the ocean air keeps conditions mild year-round. The town carries a laid-back surf culture that belies how seriously this stretch of Southern California takes its golf — several quality courses operate within a short radius.
Talega is a daily-fee facility open to the public, and it consistently earns respect as one of the stronger non-resort options in the area. The views across the valley toward the hills are a constant companion throughout the round.
