Jack Nicklaus designed this private club, which takes its name from his famous nickname — one of roughly 400 courses the Golden Bear has put his signature on worldwide, though this one carries a particularly personal stamp. Opened in the early 2000s within the gated Keene's Pointe residential community on the western shore of Lake Burden, the layout weaves through one of the most carefully planned lakeside neighborhoods in Central Florida, with water features and wetland preserves shaping nearly every routing decision.
Windermere sits in the heart of the Butler Chain of Lakes, a string of 11 connected lakes that defines both the landscape and the lifestyle of this affluent Orange County enclave. The terrain is quintessential Central Florida — flat, sandy, and studded with mature oaks and pines — which Nicklaus's team worked with rather than against, using elevation changes around greens and aggressive bunkering to manufacture challenge where the land offers little natural drama.
As a private members' club anchoring a residential development, the Golden Bear Club is built for a refined, unhurried experience. Residents and their guests play a course that reflects Nicklaus's well-known design philosophy: strategic options off the tee, firm and fast conditions, and greens that reward patient, precise approach play.
