Few golf courses in California demand as much respect from the atmosphere as this one. Sierra Star sits at roughly 8,000 feet elevation in Mammoth Lakes, a resort town carved into the eastern Sierra Nevada where the air is thin, drives fly noticeably farther, and the mountain scenery competes aggressively with the game itself. The San Joaquin Ridge and the volcanic formations of the Mammoth Mountain ski area form a backdrop that most golfers simply aren't prepared for on their first visit.
The layout plays as a par 70, which tends to focus the routing around the terrain rather than padding yardage, and the short alpine season — typically June through October, snow permitting — gives the course a sense of occasion that year-round facilities rarely develop. Fairways thread through lodgepole pine and high-desert scrub at an elevation where even mid-irons behave differently.
Mammoth Lakes has built a genuine identity as a four-season mountain destination, and Sierra Star functions as one of its signature warm-weather experiences — a course where the setting is as much the point as the golf itself.
