Port Alberni sits at the head of the Alberni Inlet, deep in the heart of Vancouver Island, surrounded by some of the most dramatic old-growth forest and mountain terrain in the Pacific Northwest. The Alberni Golf Club reflects that environment — a course where towering Douglas firs line the fairways and the natural topography of the island's interior valley shapes nearly every hole. This is working-class Vancouver Island golf, straightforward and honest, without the resort polish of Tofino or the prestige of Victoria's top clubs, but with a genuine local character that regulars clearly treasure.
The club has served Port Alberni's community for decades, functioning as the social and sporting anchor for golfers in a region that sees heavy rainfall off the inlet and lush, soft conditions for much of the year. Firm, fast fairways are not what you come here for — expect green turf, receptive greens, and a course that plays differently in the dry summer months than the long wet season.
For visitors making the drive up Highway 4 from Parksville or crossing over from Tofino, the Alberni Golf Club offers a genuinely local experience — a chance to play where island residents actually play, rather than where the tourism brochures point.
