Cleeve Hill sits at the highest point of the Cotswolds, perched on exposed limestone common land above Cheltenham at roughly 1,000 feet above sea level. That elevation is the defining fact of the place — on a clear day the views stretch across the Severn Vale toward the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons, and on a bad one the wind comes at you from directions that bear no relationship to the flagstick. The course shares its ground with the open common, meaning grazing animals have as much right to be there as you do, and encounters with sheep are a routine part of the round.
The club dates to 1891, making it one of the older foundations in Gloucestershire, and the layout has the character of a genuine links-style upland course — firm, fast, and exposed — despite sitting well inland. Cotswold stone walls, gorse, and cropped turf define the aesthetic rather than trees or manicured parkland.
Cheltenham is just below, best known for its National Hunt racing festival and a refined Regency townscape that makes it one of England's more handsome country towns. Golfers staying in or near the town have an outstanding, genuinely unusual test waiting on the hill above.
