Few clubs on the western shore of Lake Minnetonka carry the pedigree of Wayzata Country Club. Founded in the early 20th century, the club has long been one of the Twin Cities' most prestigious private retreats, drawing a membership that prizes understated tradition over flash. The course was designed by Seth Raynor, the protégé of Charles Blair Macdonald, which places it in genuinely rare company — Raynor's portfolio includes some of the most admired layouts in American golf, and his template holes (the Redan, the Biarritz, the Eden) leave fingerprints that serious students of the game will recognize immediately.
The setting does the design no disservice. Wayzata sits in the leafy, lake-dotted western suburbs of Minneapolis, where the landscape shifts between mature hardwoods and open glacial terrain. Summers are lush and green; the course plays firm and fast when conditions allow, rewarding those who think their way around rather than overpower it.
For anyone drawn to classical architecture and the quieter pleasures of a well-run members' club, Wayzata represents exactly the kind of course worth going out of your way to play — if you can manage an invitation.
