Rattle Run has earned a reputation well beyond its St. Clair County address, consistently drawing players from across Michigan and neighboring states as one of the genuinely respected public-access layouts in the region. Designed by Arthur Hills and opened in 1977, it occupies a stretch of rolling, wooded terrain in the Blue Water Area of Michigan's Thumb, where the St. Clair River corridor shapes both the landscape and the unhurried pace of local life. The course has hosted numerous Michigan Golf Association events and earned regular placement on statewide "best public courses" lists — recognition that reflects real design quality rather than marketing.
Hills gave Rattle Run a routing that rewards strategic thinking over raw power, with tree-lined fairways that demand accuracy and greens complexes that offer multiple interesting pin positions. The par-73 layout is not a gimmick — the extra stroke reflects genuine design choices rather than filler holes.
China Township itself sits near Port Huron, a working river city with deep maritime history and a modest but loyal golf culture. Playing Rattle Run feels like discovering what public golf looks like when someone took the architecture seriously.
