High desert Oregon has a way of surprising you, and Christmas Valley is perhaps the most unexpected address in the state's golf landscape. The town itself — a remote, unincorporated community in Lake County, roughly 100 miles southeast of Bend — sits in one of Oregon's least-traveled corners, a vast open basin ringed by volcanic ridges, sand dunes, and ancient lake beds. You don't pass through Christmas Valley on the way to anywhere else; you go there on purpose.
What that means for a round of golf is a quality that's genuinely rare: near-total solitude. This is high desert terrain at around 4,300 feet elevation, where the air is dry and thin, skies run enormous, and the landscape has an austere, almost lunar character that no manicured resort could manufacture. The surrounding Lake County is one of the least densely populated counties in the contiguous United States.
A municipal course serving a remote community like this is built for the people who actually live out here — practical, unpretentious, and rooted in a place most golfers will never think to visit. That, honestly, is most of its appeal.
