Griffith Park's North Course carries the kind of civic golf history that most American cities can only envy. Along with its companion South Course, it has served Los Angeles golfers since the 1930s, operating as one of the most heavily played public golf complexes in the country. Generations of Angelenos have learned the game here, and the courses remain a democratic anchor in a city where tee times can otherwise demand serious money or a membership card.
The layout occupies the hilly interior of Griffith Park, one of the largest urban parks in the United States, and that terrain shapes everything about how the North plays. Elevation changes push shots in unexpected directions, tree-lined corridors demand accuracy off the tee, and the surrounding parkland — dry chaparral, eucalyptus groves, the Santa Monica Mountains rising in the distance — gives the round a character that purely suburban courses rarely achieve.
At par 71, the North Course plays shorter than a championship test, but the topography ensures that scoring well requires more than simply hitting the ball far. For the everyday Los Angeles golfer, it remains a genuine institution.
