Few golf courses in America carry the historical weight of Desert Forest. Opened in 1962 and designed by Red Lawrence, it is widely credited as the first golf course ever built specifically to showcase — rather than fight — the raw Sonoran Desert landscape. Before Desert Forest, desert courses typically imported turf and irrigation to create a green oasis; Lawrence instead routed fairways through saguaro cactus and native scrub, letting the desert serve as both backdrop and hazard. The result changed how architects thought about building in arid climates, and its influence echoes through virtually every desert course built since.
Carefree sits in the high Sonoran Desert northeast of Scottsdale, at an elevation that gives the air a sharpness and clarity you don't find in the valley below.
