Blackmoor is one of the most admired heathland courses in southern England, and genuinely among the finest in Hampshire. Designed by H.S. Colt and opened in 1913, it occupies a stretch of classic Surrey-border heath just outside Bordon — heather, silver birch, Scots pine, and sandy subsoil that drains fast and produces firm, running turf. Colt was at the height of his powers here, and the routing makes intelligent use of gentle elevation changes across what is largely open, airy ground. The course has a well-earned reputation for strategic interest, rewarding accurate placement off the tee far more than raw length.
The par of 69 reflects a design philosophy rather than a shortcoming — Colt built a course of tight, precise challenges, not a slugging contest, and several of the two-shot holes are genuinely demanding despite their modest card length.
Bordon sits in the East Hampshire heathlands, an area that shares its sandy geology and quiet, wooded character with the better-known Surrey heathland belt. Blackmoor is a members' club with a serious, traditional atmosphere, and it draws visitors who appreciate understated, architecturally honest golf over spectacle.
