Pestana Silves Golf Course

Few courses in the Algarve announce themselves quite as boldly as this one. Pestana Silves occupies a stretch of inland Algarve countryside a few kilometers from the ancient Moorish capital of Silves, whose rust-red sandstone castle has watched over this part of southern Portugal for nearly a thousand years. Designed by the respected Portuguese architect Tomaz Melo Vera, the layout opened in the 1990s and quickly earned a reputation as one of the more demanding and visually distinctive courses on a stretch of coastline that has no shortage of either. Rolling terrain, mature orange and carob trees, and the cork oak woodland that defines the Algarve's interior give the course a distinctly different feel from the coastal links-style tracks further south.

The design rewards patience and course management over raw power. Fairways bend through contoured land and several holes ask for precise approach angles, with water features adding pressure at key moments.

Silves itself is worth the detour beyond the course. The town sits on the Arade River and was the capital of Moorish Al-Gharb before Lisbon rose to prominence — a richly layered destination that makes Pestana Silves a genuinely compelling inland Algarve choice.
