Highland National sits on land that has hosted golf in St. Paul since the 1920s, making it one of the Twin Cities' longest-serving public layouts. Originally developed as part of the city's park system, it occupies the Highland Park neighborhood on the city's southwest side — elevated ground above the Mississippi River bluffs that gives the course its name and, on clear days, genuine views of the surrounding metro. It plays as a true municipal, open to all comers, and carries the well-worn character that comes from decades of everyday golfers.
The Highland Park neighborhood itself is one of St. Paul's most established, a mix of bungalows, mature elms, and the kind of walkable blocks that feel genuinely Midwestern. Golf in the Twin Cities runs long into autumn when the hardwoods turn, and Highland National captures that seasonal quality — open and airy in summer, dramatic in October color.
For a city course, it demands respect. The terrain rolls enough to reward course management, and the par-72 layout stretches the full range of shot-making. It's the kind of place where locals build their games over years, returning season after season.
