Few courses anywhere in Britain carry the unassuming authority of Southerness. Designed by Mackenzie Ross and opened in 1947, it ranks among the finest links courses in Scotland — a remarkable achievement given it was built on a shoestring in the years of postwar austerity. Ross, better known for his restoration of Turnberry after the Second World War, created something genuinely original here: a links that rewards patience and punishes hubris in equal measure, with the famous par-3 12th hole — a long, exposed one-shotter over gorse-framed ground with the Solway Firth stretched behind it — widely regarded as one of the great short holes in Scottish golf.
Southerness sits on the Solway Coast southeast of Dumfries, where Galloway meets the sea. The light here changes constantly, the wind rarely rests, and the turf is pure links — firm, bouncy, and utterly unforgiving when the breeze stiffens off the water.
The par of 69 tells you something important: this is not a course that flatters length. It demands craft, local knowledge, and respect. Championship and club events have been held here for decades, yet the place retains the feel of a members' course that simply got lucky with its land.
