Adel sits in Dallas County, roughly 25 miles west of Des Moines along the North Raccoon River — and that river-valley terrain is almost certainly what shaped this course. The rolling, wooded corridors and natural grade changes that characterize this stretch of central Iowa tend to produce courses with more topographic variety than the surrounding prairie flatlands might suggest. When a layout takes its name directly from the land it occupies, that's usually a fair indication the designers let the ground do the talking.
As a public course serving a small county-seat town, River Valley almost certainly functions as a genuine community asset — the kind of place where local members play the same holes for decades and know every slope and seasonal mood intimately. Central Iowa's continental climate means firm, fast conditions by midsummer and a genuinely short season, so regulars tend to squeeze every round they can out of late April through October.
A par-72 layout gives the routing room to mix genuine par-5 length with shorter, more strategic holes — the combination that keeps a home course interesting across a full season of repeat play.
