Few private clubs in the New York metropolitan area carry the institutional weight of Westchester Hills Golf Club. Founded in the early 20th century, the club sits in White Plains — the civic and commercial heart of Westchester County — and reflects the era when prosperous New Yorkers pushed north along the Harlem Railroad line to establish their country clubs in the rolling, wooded hills above the city. The course was designed by Walter Travis, the renowned amateur champion and influential architect whose strategic, ground-game philosophy rewarded precise thinking over raw power, and its par-70 layout reflects his preference for quality over length.
Westchester County is one of the most golf-dense corridors in America, home to a remarkable collection of Golden Age layouts, and Westchester Hills holds its own in that distinguished company. The terrain is classic Northeastern hardwood country — elevation changes, mature trees framing tight corridors, and turf conditions that shift meaningfully with the seasons.
For members, this is a club defined by intimacy and tradition rather than spectacle. The shorter par 70 demands shotmaking and course management more than power, rewarding players who think their way around rather than overpower it.
