Mancelona sits in the heart of northern Michigan's Antrim County, a region that has quietly developed one of the Midwest's most concentrated collections of golf courses. The area's rolling glacial terrain, abundant inland lakes, and dense forests of birch and pine create a natural canvas that makes the northern Lower Peninsula a seasonal destination for golfers from across the Great Lakes states. The name alone signals what defines this layout: water, and plenty of it.
Lakes of the North is a resort and residential community development, a style of golf common to this part of Michigan where the course anchors a broader property and serves both vacationing guests and property owners. These layouts tend to reward strategic thinking over raw power, using water hazards and wooded corridors to demand accuracy and course management.
Northern Michigan's short but intense golf season — roughly May through October — gives play here a particular urgency. When the hardwoods turn in September and October, this stretch of Antrim County becomes one of the more visually striking places in the Midwest to walk 18.
