Golf de Valcros

Golf de Valcros carries one of the more distinguished pedigrees in French golf. Laid out in the early 1960s by Henry Cotton — the three-time Open Championship winner and one of Britain's greatest ever players — it was among the first courses Cotton designed after his playing career wound down, and it reflects his exacting standards. The layout moves through dense cork oak and maritime pine forest in the Massif des Maures, a landscape so characteristically Provençal that the golf almost feels incidental to simply being there. Tight, shaded fairways demand placement over power, and the natural terrain does most of the architectural work.

La Londe-les-Maures sits in the southern Var, a few kilometers inland from the Côte d'Azur between Hyères and Le Lavandou. The surrounding hills shield the area from the mistral, making the microclimate unusually mild even by Mediterranean standards — which means Valcros stays playable deep into what passes for winter.
