Stoney Creek Course

Stoney Creek at Wintergreen Resort sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Nelson County, one of Virginia's most scenic inland retreats. The course — actually two 9-hole loops, the Monocan and the Tuckahoe, combined here as an 18-hole experience — was designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1988. Jones shaped the layout to work with the mountain terrain rather than against it, producing a round that moves through forested ridgelines and along the creek corridors that give the course its name. It has earned a consistent reputation as one of the stronger resort courses in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Wintergreen itself is a four-season destination, and Stoney Creek functions as the resort's centerpiece outdoor experience beyond skiing. The elevation and tree cover keep conditions cooler than the Virginia Piedmont below, which extends the comfortable playing season into summer months that punish lower-altitude courses with heat.

Expect genuine mountain golf — uneven lies, elevation changes that complicate club selection, and the kind of views that occasionally make you forget to keep score.
