Wessington Springs sits in the heart of Jerauld County, deep in the South Dakota prairie — a stretch of the Great Plains where the land opens wide, the wind blows without apology, and a golf course has to earn its place in the landscape. Springs CC is a private members' club serving this small agricultural community, the kind of course that exists because local golfers built it and sustained it through generations of support, not because a developer came through with a blueprint.
At par 68, the layout leans shorter and tighter than a regulation championship track, which in prairie conditions means something different than it would elsewhere. When a sustained south wind picks up across open farmland, even the most familiar holes can play well beyond their length — club selection becomes a genuine test of local knowledge, and that knowledge is currency among the membership.
Private clubs in communities this size tend to carry a strong sense of ownership and tradition. Members know every bounce, every quirk of the greens, every hole that looks straightforward and isn't. That intimacy is something no scorecard can measure.
