Rees Jones left a distinctive mark on this corner of Virginia's New Kent County, designing The Club at Viniterra as the centerpiece of a wine country community anchored by New Kent Winery. The course opened in 2008 and plays through a gently rolling landscape of hardwood groves and vineyard rows, giving it an atmosphere that sits somewhere between a classic parkland layout and the pastoral countryside of the Virginia Piedmont. Jones, long associated with major championship conditioning and bold risk-reward architecture, brought that same sensibility to a setting far removed from his usual tournament stages.
New Kent sits roughly halfway between Richmond and Williamsburg along the I-64 corridor, placing Viniterra within easy reach of two historically rich Virginia cities. The terrain here is softly contoured rather than dramatic, and the tree canopies and open vineyard views give the round a relaxed, unhurried quality that fits the wine country setting.
As a private club, Viniterra carries the feel of a members' retreat — a place to play unhurried golf in surroundings that reward a slow pace and an attentive eye for the course's subtleties.
