Smøla Golfklubb

Smøla Golfklubb occupies one of the more genuinely unusual settings in Scandinavian golf — a low-lying Atlantic island off the coast of Møre og Romsdal, roughly halfway between Kristiansund and the open Norwegian Sea. Smøla is better known internationally for its wind farm and its status as a protected wetland and bird reserve than for golf, which makes the presence of a course here all the more surprising. The island is flat, treeless, and scoured by westerly winds for much of the year, giving the course a raw, links-adjacent character that you won't find at parkland clubs inland.

Playing here means contending with conditions rather than architecture in the conventional sense. The landscape does most of the design work — wide skies, coastal light, rough moorland grasses, and wind that can swing the effective difficulty of any hole dramatically depending on the day.

For visiting golfers, the journey is part of the appeal. Smøla is reached by ferry, and arriving to play golf on a windswept island nature reserve is an experience that has little competition anywhere in Norway.
