Austin's relationship with golf runs deep along the Colorado River corridor, and Riverside Golf Club sits squarely in that tradition as one of the city's most accessible and well-worn municipal layouts. The course occupies land shaped by the river's influence — flat to gently rolling terrain characteristic of the Austin lowlands, where mature pecans and live oaks frame fairways and the Texas heat has a way of baking the turf firm and fast by midsummer. For decades it has served as the everyday course for east Austin golfers, a place where regulars walk the same ground season after season.
Municipal courses like Riverside carry a particular culture: unpretentious, democratic, and reliably busy. This is where beginners find their footing, where scratch players sharpen their short games, and where the afternoon wave of workers squeezes in 9 holes before dark. The pace and price point have always been part of the appeal.
Austin's explosive growth has transformed much of the city around it, but a public golf course along the river remains one of the few spaces where the old, unhurried version of the city still shows up on a Tuesday afternoon.
