Few American golf clubs carry a history as dense as Myopia Hunt Club's. Founded in 1882 — originally as a social and sporting club — Myopia developed its golf course in the 1890s, and what emerged was one of the most significant venues in early American golf. The club hosted the U.S. Open 4 times between 1898 and 1908, making it a genuine cradle of the championship game in this country. Herbert Leeds, a largely self-taught designer of the era, shaped the course into a demanding, ground-hugging layout that rewarded strategic thinking long before that phrase became fashionable.
The course itself sits on the rolling farmland of Massachusetts' North Shore, where the terrain is naturally varied and the turf has the firm, fescue-influenced character that defines old-line New England golf. Myopia plays harder than its numbers suggest — the routing is strategic, the greens complex, and the rough can be punishing.
This is a private members' club steeped in tradition, from the hunt club roots to the colonial-era architecture of the clubhouse. For those fortunate enough to play it, Myopia delivers something increasingly rare: the sensation of stepping into the actual origins of American golf.
