Few corners of Australian golf feel quite as removed from the mainland's resort circuits as the Huon Valley and Channel region south of Hobart. Margate sits on the western shore of North West Bay, a sheltered inlet where the Huon Highway hugs the waterline and the land rises steeply toward kunanyi / Mount Wellington behind the city. It is quiet, distinctly Tasmanian country — cool, green, and largely unhurried.
North West Bay Golf Club occupies that landscape as a genuine local institution, the kind of club that anchors a small community rather than courts visitors. Courses like this tend to reward the golfer who pays attention: rolling rural terrain, prevailing winds off the water, and firm ground conditions in summer that change shot values in ways a first-time visitor rarely anticipates correctly.
Tasmania has quietly built one of Australia's most interesting regional golf scenes, with the island's modest scale meaning a travelling golfer can reach genuinely varied courses within an hour or two of Hobart. North West Bay is a solid, unpretentious starting point for that exploration.
