Nacogdoches has a legitimate claim to being the oldest town in Texas, and it sits deep in the Piney Woods, a landscape defined by tall loblolly pines, red-clay soil, and the kind of dense East Texas forest that feels entirely unlike the open scrubland most outsiders associate with the state. Lumberjack National — the name a nod to Stephen F. Austin State University's athletic identity — brings collegiate golf to this corner of the region, where the timber industry and university life have long shaped the local character.
As a university-affiliated course, it functions as both a competitive venue for the Lumberjacks program and a public-access layout open to the surrounding community. East Texas golf tends to be defined by tree-lined corridors, ground that holds moisture from the region's relatively high rainfall, and terrain that rolls more than outsiders expect this far south.
If you're coming from elsewhere in Texas, the Piney Woods genuinely feel like a different state — greener, shadier, and cooler — and Lumberjack National reflects that distinct regional identity in a way the scorecard simply can't convey.
