Pecanwood

Pecanwood Golf Club sits on the northern shore of Hartbeespoort Dam, one of the most dramatic waterside settings in South African golf. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1997, making it one of the Golden Bear's signature works on the African continent. True to Nicklaus's design philosophy, the layout rewards strategic thinking and precise shot placement over raw power, with water, bunkering, and elevation changes conspiring to make club selection a constant conversation.

The dam itself is the defining presence here. Several holes play directly along or across the water, and the Magaliesberg mountains form a backdrop that few courses anywhere can match. The surrounding estate community adds a resort-like polish to the experience — this is golf played at a deliberate, unhurried pace, where the scenery is as much a part of the round as the scorecard.

Hartbeespoort sits roughly an hour northwest of Johannesburg and Pretoria, close enough to draw serious Highveld golfers for a weekend escape but distinct enough in character to feel like a genuine destination. The warm, dry climate means the course plays firm and fast for much of the year, and the kikuyu turf holds its colour reliably through the Highveld winters.
