Few settings in Norwegian golf match what awaits at Hardanger Golfklubb. The course sits in the heart of the Hardangerfjord region — one of western Norway's most dramatically beautiful landscapes, where steep orchard-covered hillsides tumble down toward the water and snow-capped peaks frame the horizon in almost every direction. Øystese itself is a small village on the northern shore of the Hardangerfjord, roughly an hour east of Bergen, and the terrain here is genuinely mountainous, which means the course demands creativity from both the designer and the golfer.
Vestland's short summers concentrate golf into a tight season, and courses in this part of Norway earn their reputations by working with rugged, uneven ground rather than against it. Expect elevation changes, tight corridors shaped by the natural landscape, and conditions that shift quickly as weather rolls in off the fjord. This is golf where the environment does much of the architectural work.
For visiting players, the round is as much about the surroundings as the scorecard. The Hardangerfjord is Norway's 2nd-longest fjord and one of the country's most visited natural destinations, drawing travelers for its fruit blossoms in spring and vivid foliage in autumn — and the course sits squarely inside that spectacle.
