Few private clubs in Southern California carry the quiet prestige of Birnam Wood. Occupying a secluded corner of Montecito — the affluent enclave just east of Santa Barbara that has long attracted entertainers, executives, and old money — the club has cultivated a reputation built on exclusivity and an almost deliberate low profile. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the course, and his characteristic combination of generous fairways, bold bunkering, and strategic water features suits the terrain beautifully, rewarding thoughtful shot-making over raw power.
The Santa Ynez Mountains frame the property on one side while the Pacific coastline lies just a few miles to the south, giving the course a dramatic sense of enclosure that the coastal sage and mature oaks only deepen. Santa Barbara's near-perfect Mediterranean climate — warm, dry summers and mild winters — means the turf stays in excellent shape year-round, and afternoon rounds often come with a cooling marine layer drifting in from the channel.
At par 70, Birnam Wood plays shorter than many championship layouts, but the routing demands precision and course management rather than distance. It is a members' world, rarely glimpsed from the outside, which only adds to the mythology of a club that has never particularly needed the spotlight.
