La Tahona sits within one of Uruguay's most upscale residential developments, a gated community on the Atlantic coast corridor east of Montevideo that has drawn the country's professional class and well-heeled Porteños crossing the Río de la Plata for weekends and longer stays. The course is the centrepiece of a private club lifestyle, surrounded by luxury villas and mature woodland that gives it a more enclosed, park-like feel than the open coastal linksland you might expect this close to the Uruguayan Riviera.
The design works through tree-lined corridors and gently rolling terrain, rewarding accurate ball-striking over raw power. The setting in Ciudad de la Costa means the land is relatively flat — typical of this stretch of Canelones department — but mature vegetation creates definition and a genuine sense of separation between holes, making the course feel more substantial than the topography alone would suggest.
For visiting golfers, La Tahona offers a window into Uruguayan club culture: unhurried, genuinely welcoming to guests when access is arranged, and a world away from the tourist-facing resort golf of Punta del Este just up the coast.
