Pasadena's municipal golf scene has long punched above its weight, and the C.W. Koiner course at Brookside Golf Club is a central reason why. Sitting on city-owned land adjacent to the Rose Bowl, Brookside's 2 courses occupy one of the more extraordinary pieces of public golf real estate in Southern California — broad, park-like fairways framed by mature trees and the San Gabriel Mountains rising to the north. Koiner is the longer and more demanding of the 2 layouts, generally regarded as the more serious test for players looking to score.
Brookside's location means it has served as a reliable, accessible option for Angelenos for decades, drawing a wide range of players from across the greater Los Angeles basin. The Rose Bowl Stadium looms nearby, lending the grounds an unmistakable civic grandeur that few municipal tracks can match.
The course plays through open, generous terrain typical of Southern California parkland design — forgiving enough for recreational rounds but with enough length and nuance to reward players who bring a real game.
