Few Scottish seaside courses wear their origins as honestly as Royal Tarlair. Laid out along the rugged Aberdeenshire cliffside above the North Sea, this municipally owned links-style layout in the small harbour town of Macduff earns its "Royal" designation as a genuine piece of regional golfing heritage — a reminder that prestige and exclusivity aren't always the same thing. The course occupies a dramatic coastal shelf, with holes threading between the cliff edge and rising ground inland, and the North Sea sitting in full, unignorable view throughout the round.
Aberdeenshire golf tends to reward patience and local knowledge over power. The persistent coastal wind off the Moray Firth can transform any hole on any given day, and the firm, natural turf plays differently from anything manufactured inland. Macduff itself sits across the River Deveron from Banff, a quietly handsome corner of Scotland that most visiting golfers pass through on the way to better-known names along the coast.
