San Juan Oaks opened in 1996 in the rolling hills southeast of Hollister, designed by Fred Couples and Gene Bates — one of the more distinctive architect pairings of that era. Couples, a Masters champion whose effortless game mirrored his design philosophy, collaborated with Bates to create a layout that works with the open, oak-studded terrain rather than against it. The course earned a strong regional reputation quickly and has consistently ranked among the better public-access tracks in Central California.
The setting does a lot of work here. Hollister sits in San Benito County at the edge of the Salinas Valley, where the coastal hills give way to broader agricultural land and the oaks that name the course are very much present — framing fairways and penalizing the wayward shot in a way that feels natural rather than punitive. The climate runs warm and dry through summer, making it playable well into autumn.
For golfers visiting the Monterey Peninsula or the greater Bay Area, San Juan Oaks offers a compelling detour — a well-regarded, tree-lined parkland experience away from the coastal crowds, at a price point that makes it genuinely accessible.
