Few golf courses in the Los Angeles area can claim a setting quite like this one. Angeles National sits at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in Sunland, on the northeastern fringe of the city where the suburbs give way to rugged high desert terrain. The course was designed by Ron Fream and opened in 2002, occupying a dramatic canyon site along the Tujunga Wash that most developers would have considered unbuildable. That willingness to work with difficult, sculpted land is exactly what gives Angeles National its identity.
Fream leaned into the natural contours rather than flattening them, producing a layout that feels genuinely earned — elevation changes, exposed ridgelines, and views of the surrounding mountains that remind you constantly where you are. It's a public facility, and one that brought genuine design ambition to a region where quality daily-fee options can be hard to find outside the resort corridor.
The San Gabriel Valley climate keeps the course playable year-round, though mountain afternoons can bring sharp winds down the canyon. Come for the scenery; stay because the golf is better than you expected.
