Marondera Golf Club

Marondera Golf Club sits in one of Zimbabwe's most agreeable provincial towns, about 70 kilometres east of Harare along the Mutare road. At roughly 1,600 metres above sea level on the highveld plateau, the air is thin and cool by tropical standards, and the ball flies noticeably further than golfers accustomed to lower altitudes might expect — something first-timers tend to discover with a surprised smile on the opening tee.

The course is a product of the classic club-golf tradition that took root across Zimbabwe's provincial towns during the colonial era, and it retains that unhurried, members'-club character. Mature indigenous trees define the layout, and the well-maintained kikuyu fairways and bumpy but honest greens reward local knowledge as much as raw power. Like many Zimbabwean inland clubs, the challenge lies in reading the subtle highveld terrain and managing a course that can play firm and fast during the dry winter months between May and August.

Marondera itself is a market and farming town in Mashonaland East, surrounded by tobacco and maize country, and the club functions as a genuine community hub — the kind of place where weekend competitions draw a loyal membership and strangers are welcomed into the Saturday medal without ceremony.
