The Marshall Islands sit roughly halfway between Hawaii and Australia, a scattering of low coral atolls barely rising above the Pacific. Roi-Namur is on the northernmost tip of Kwajalein Atoll, a remote island that has been home to a U.S. Army installation since World War II — the site of some of the war's most brutal fighting and, later, a key installation in the U.S. missile defense and space-tracking mission. Golf here exists entirely within that context: a course built and maintained for the small community of military personnel and contractors who call this isolated outpost home, as far from a commercial golf destination as it is possible to be.
Playing here means teeing it up on coral-based terrain just feet above sea level, with trade winds a near-constant presence and the Pacific visible at almost every turn. The maintenance and conditions will reflect the realities of a remote island posting rather than a manicured resort.
Getting here requires military access or sponsored clearance. For the people stationed on Roi-Namur, this course is less a destination than a lifeline — one of the few recreational outlets available on an island measured in hundreds of acres, not square miles.
