Few private clubs in the American South have generated as much quiet reverence among serious golfers as Dormie Club. Opened in 2010 and designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it was built from the ground up as a pure golf retreat — a members' and their guests' sanctuary with no real estate, no resort amenity creep, just golf and the camaraderie that follows a long day on a great course. Coore & Crenshaw routed the layout through the Sandhills' native wiregrass and longleaf pine, working the natural rolls and sandy soil the way the region practically demands, and the result regularly earns placement among the top courses in North Carolina and the broader United States.
West End sits in Moore County, the heart of the Sandhills belt that also claims Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Mid Pines — arguably the densest concentration of exceptional golf in America east of Pebble Beach. That sandy, well-drained soil and mild Piedmont climate mean the turf plays firm and fast, rewarding ground game and imagination over sheer power.
Dormie's routing rewards creativity off the tee and demands honest course management around greens that have the subtle, deceptive character Coore & Crenshaw are known for. The pace is unhurried, walking is the obvious choice, and the whole experience leans hard into what golf used to feel like before it got complicated.
