Few courses in Australia carry the quiet prestige of Mount Broughton. Founded in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, the club has long been regarded as one of the finest private layouts in the state — a serious test that rewards strategic thinking over raw power, set across undulating, sheep-grazed country that defines this part of the Highlands plateau.
The course plays through mature trees and natural contours characteristic of the Moss Vale district, where the elevation sits around 700 metres and the climate runs considerably cooler and wetter than Sydney, just 130 kilometres to the north. Expect firm fairways in summer and genuine chill in the early morning rounds that members seem to favour. The greens have a reputation for being subtly complex — pace and break here are earned knowledge, not guesswork.
Moss Vale itself sits at the heart of the Southern Highlands, a region long associated with weekending Sydneysiders, pastoral estates, and a relaxed but genuinely proud local golf culture. Mount Broughton remains very much a members' club in the traditional sense — access is through introduction, and the atmosphere reflects that.
